The drive down to either Batopilas or Urique is spectacular, a once in a lifetime experience, claimed to be some of the most awesome drives in the world dropping 1 mile down switch backs that “hang” onto the sides of the canyons - not to be missed!

    LA BUFA

La Bufa, once a thriving mining town, is located 118km from Creel on the road to Batopilas. Enjoy the incredible scenic ride down from Creel arriving in La Bufa after descending 1,600 meters on the hair-raising switch backs that drop you down into the subtropical canyon.
This was once the home of over 3,000 gold and copper miners but now only handful of inhabitants and a small Tarahumara community live here.

    What to do:
Relax in the wonderful climate and explore the old mines. There are several day hikes climbing up the canyons and in season enjoy seeing pairs of Macaws flying around.

    Services:
Here you’ll find only one hotel/guest house where you’ll be provided with excellent meals and be supplied with all the history of this once bustling town.

    La Cancha Homestay and Camping

There is a store here belonging to Jose where you will find very basic groceries and ice cold gatorades.

    BATOPILAS

From La Bufa, the road continues to wind around on the side of the canyons for another 27km to complete this spectacular journey and arrive in this town situated “in the middle of nowhere”. Batopilas, boxed in by high canyon walls, has basically one major street that runs along parallel with the river. This was another old mining town of great significance and wealth at the turn of the 20 century (this was the second place in Mexico to have electricity) and there is still plenty of evidence with the beautiful colonial type buildings and the ruins of the great Shepherd hacienda.
Because of the sub-tropical climate here papayas, mangoes, oranges. bouganvillea and much more grow in abundance and if the heat is on you can always keep cool with a quick dip in the river.

    What To Do:
There are a couple of day trips available here:

Of course, time can easily be spent just soaking up the atmosphere, learning the history of the place, exploring the old hacienda, or discovering secluded swim holes further upriver. Batopilas is also the start of the multi-day trek to the town of Urique on the other side of the canyons. Hiring a guide is recommended.

    Services
There is now a fair number of hotels (most with private bathroom) and restaurants here. It is possible to camp here along the river.
There are a couple of souvenir shops situated in the plaza and also an art shop with paintings of the canyons and a silver jewellry shop.

    Hotels:

    Restaurants: Phones:
There is one phone line in Batopilas which can be found right in the center of town in the plaza.

    Medical Services:
There is a doctor here and a small clinic but medical supplies are very limited.

    URIQUE

An old mining town situated on the floor of the canyon Urique, similar to Batopilas, is a little smaller and certainly more peaceful. Still full of old colonial style buildings and provides numerous day hikes, plenty of beaches to relax on along the river, great swim holes and very friendly people in this exotic atmosphere.

What to do: There are various day hikes from Urique:

As in Batopilas this is a good place to relax to find you favourite swim hole.

    Services

There is a camp ground here where they provide basic bathroom. Situated at the end of town upriver.
Camping is also possible on one of the beaches along the river.
There are a couple of basic but good, clean restaurants here situated on the main street.
Several stores in which you can buy drinking water and other groceries.
