The Copper Canyon, situated in North West Mexico in the state of Chihuahua,
is becoming more and more accessible to the modern day traveller. Since 1962 when the
railroad opened, access from the west coast became much easier, and then 20 years ago, when
the road was paved from Chihuahua all the way to Creel in the heart of the Canyons.
The Copper Canyon, created over 40 million years ago by volcanic activity
with canyons forming by erosion of the elements, is actually seven major canyons with a
network of smaller canyons joining them. They host an amazing variety of vegetation and
wild life and have tempted Native American people, pioneers, missionaries, miners and
modern day adventurer to explore the depths of this wilderness.
