CREEL
DIVISADERO and AREPO. CEROCAHUI BASASEACHI WATERFALL |
The first stop for most people who come to the Copper Canyon is CREEL.
This is principally a lumber town of roughly 5,000 inhabitants, and with an altitude
of 2338 meters can be very cold in the winter months but generally has a very pleasant,
fresh climate with the rainy season from the end of June through to mid September.
It is a pretty town set in a valley surrounded by pine covered hills and nearby can be
found waterfalls, a lake, hot springs, rock formations and canyons.

Creel is a beautiful area and there is much to see and do on a daily basis either by foot,

office situated in the plaza of Creel.
Also available are mountain bike rentals or take a horse out to some of these spectacular
sights.

Divisadero is a one hour drive southwest from Creel and offers great canyon views.
This is also where the first class train stops to give you a 15 minute stunning view of
these canyons that overlook the Urique River 1,000 M. below.
What to do:
Here at the station you can buy artcraft directly from the Tarahumara women and eat a
“gordita” at one of the many food stands.
The town Areponapuchi is another 5 minute drive down the road and this is where the trail
starts to hike down to the bottom of the canyon. It is advisable to hire a local guide for
this hike taking a day to descend and another to climb back up.
Services:
There is one hotel “Divisadero Barrancas” at Divisadero train station overlooking the canyons
and in Areponapuchi you will find hotel Posada Barrancas (also on the rim of the canyon) and
hotel Mansion Tarahumara. It is worth staying in one of these hotels for the views and
the price also include all meals and a couple of trips.
Please note that this is the only accomodation available, however, those travelling on a
budget may be able to rent a room with one of the local families and camping is also possible.

A small, colourful town set in a secluded valley has a beautiful 17 century mission and offers a tranquil setting.
What to do:
There are several gentle day hikes from Cerocahui including a visit to the waterfall.
Also the mission is definitely worth a visit and tours are available from your hotel to
the canyon overlook of Urique if you are not planning on continuing your journey there.
Services:
Hotel Mission is based right in town just off the plaza and also has a restaurant/bar.
Another is the El Ramauri situated right on the plaza.
A little further from the town is the hotel Paraiso Del Oso - restaurant/bar.
There are also a couple of small restaurants in town that provide you with basic but good food.

Among the tallest single drop waterfalls on the continent Basaseachi is located at the start
of the Candamena canyon about a 100 km northwest of Creel.
The best time to visit this area is in the summer months mid-June through to September or in
the winter months if the snowfall has been good.
What to do:
A beautiful, gentle hike to reach the top and for those with a little more energy you can
actually hike right down to the bottom.
It is possible to do a day trip from Creel to Basaseachi but means spending most of the day
sitting in a vehicle.
Services:
There are a couple of hotels there and camping is possible. There is a grocery store at the
trail head.
