Tarahumara People
They call themselves the Raramuri - the light footed - a very apt name as they are famed for their ability to run for days without stopping - for example, they used to hunt deer by endurance running - not running faster than the beast but by keeping on its trail until it collapsed from exhaustion! they also speak Raramuri - their own language and although many are now able to converse in Spanish, Raramuri is always spoken in the home. They live in tranquility usually in log cabins or sometimes in caves and survive with subsitence farming growing corn, squash and beans and nearly all have a herd of goats.
Since the missionaries came 400 years ago the Tarahumara religion has officially been Catholic but in their celebrations they interpret this faith in a mixture of church and Tarahumara ways painting themselves, dressing elaborately, participating in traditional dancing, and drinking their home-made corn beer - Tesgüino. The major celebrations take place in Semana Santa (Easter week), 12 December Virgin of Guadalupe celebration and Candelaria Day 2 February.
